Immigration Once Again in the Headlines

Sometimes its hard to separate fact from fiction in the barrage of news about immigration, enforcement rules and raids. What remains clear is that for the green industry to grow, we require a sustainable and documented workforce. GGIA will continue to work with our partners in Georgia, and nationally through AmericanHort, to promote immigration policy that recognizes this need.

We ask our members to share concerns and experiences with us as reports of raids and other targeting activities increase. Please contact Chris Butts at 706-540-2813 or if you are aware of any activities regarding enforcement in your community.

Many of the reported incidents result from a February 20th memo entitled "Enforcement of the Immigration Laws to Serve the National Interest"  which lays out new rules for how the Department of Homeland Security will enforce immigration rules. While the order dramatically expands the definition of who is a potential priority target for immigration enforcement and removal, exactly how these priorities will be implemented remains to be seen. The memo also calls for the hiring of 10,000 additional ICE agents, but these moves won't happen overnight.

What can employers do now? All employers should be using the current version of the I9 form, available by clicking here, ensuring that they are properly preparing the forms and closely following the I9 employment verification process. Keep I9 forms in a separate area from other employment documents and keep them secured so that only authorized personnel has access to these records. Stay tuned for more from GGIA and AmericanHort.
