Out and About – Telling the Story for the Green Industry

Outreach, telling the story of the green industry is an important part of the work we do at GGIA. Our goal is for legislators, regulators, educators and decision makers to be fully aware of the industry and the role we play in both the economic and environmental health of our communities and our state. We were pleased to take part in two special events this week.

On Thursday, Evergreen Nursery hosted a tour for a group of GA Senators as well as representatives from US Senator David Perdue’s office and the Georgia Department of Agriculture. David Shafer, President Pro Tempore led the group as they visited a variety of agriculture sites in North Georgia. The visit gave Evergreen’s Bill and Will Ross the opportunity to show their guests how the ground-covers and perennials that Evergreen produces go from the greenhouse to the landscape. It also allowed us to discuss GGIA as well as the challenges faced by many of our members. GATE, water and workforce availability were among the topics discussed. Thanks to Senator Shafer and his group for visiting and to Evergreen for hosting.

Earlier in the week we were honored to take part in the last Advisory Council meeting presided over by Dean Scott Angle. The UGA College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences announced earlier this month that Dean Angle will be leaving the college in mid-September. The meeting was an opportunity to say thank you to Scott for all of the work he has done to advance agriculture and horticulture during his ten years at UGA. Dean Angle has led through example during his tenure by bringing unity to the college and through his dedication to his wife Theresa. Dean Angle will be missed by many. Work is well underway to find his replacement. A search committee has been put in place to recommend candidates for the post to Provost Pamela Whitten and President Jere Morehead.
