Grower Tour Destinations

The Center for Applied Nursery Research (CANR) is a non-profit 501(c)(3), founded in 1997, to provide a   managed facility and funding for ornamental horticulture research based on grower needs and conducted   under commercial growing conditions. The goal of CANR is to generate information to keep growers in   Georgia and the Southeast on the forefront of new ornamental plant breeding, evaluation and   introduction, as well as, new nursery production techniques.

The research site is located on 2 acres in Dearing, GA. It is structured like a miniature nursery with a full-   time manager to oversee the day to day operations of CANR.

The research grant process at CANR is industry-driven and directly tied to industry input. Members of the   Green Industry are invited to participate each year at our annual needs survey determining priorities for needed research. The results of our needs assessment are sent to researchers at universities around the southeast to solicit proposals based on the industry needs. These proposals are reviewed, ranked, and presented to the CANR Board of Directors for funding. Over 250 projects from across the Southeast have been funded by CANR since 1997.  For more information please see our website www.CANR.org.

Costa Farms was founded in 1961 by Jose Costa, Sr. as a tomato and calamondin citrus operation just south of Miami.  It quickly morphed into houseplant production.  Over the past six decades Costa has increased their product offering to include annual and perennial flower products.  Currently, Costa has locations in Miami, Apopka, and Venus, FL, Leicester, NC, Trenton, SC, Guangdong, China, and the Dominican Republic.

Costa Farms extended into the perennial market in 2012 when they acquired Layman Wholesale Nurseries in Trenton, SC.  Since then, Costa Farms has been committed to improving processes and people in every department here in Trenton.   Costa continues to strive to be the best team in the horticulture industry and to collaborate and grow among all of our organizational units here in the southeast and around the world.  AIPH recognized those efforts in 2016 by awarding Costa Farms with their International Grower of the Year Award.  At Costa Farms, we are proud to have such an amazing team of professionals and to be a part of such a great industry.

WHOLESALE GROWERS OF CONTAINER ORNAMENTAL SHRUBBERY

About us: We are a container ornamental nursery that has been in business since the 1940’s.  We have almost 200 acres under irrigation and grow from 1G to 15G sizes.  Our sales region covers the mid-Atlantic over to the Mississippi River.  We have made several changes in production the last few years to improve efficiency and production timing.  We now have 10 Harvest Automation robots for spacing and use 2 forklifts for loading and unloading wagons.  We also began in 2018 to use Riceland rice hulls for weed control.  We are in our second year as members of MPS.  Thank you for taking the time to come see us. Tommy, Mike, Bennett and Al Dudley

McCorkle Nurseries began as a family business in 1942, offering a one-stop retail, landscape and growing operation to the developing community around Augusta, Georgia. In 1977 they sold the retail operation and expanded the 5-acre plant farm.  In 2008, MNI Direct, a division focused on servicing the landscape industry by supplying trees and plants for commercial and residential projects in Georgia and the Carolinas was born.  Today, McCorkle Nurseries markets more than 4 million plants annually from its growing operations delivering to over 1,800 customers in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states. The growing operation consists of an 820-acre farm of which 440 acres is currently in production. McCorkle’s employees strive to exemplify its motto: “Quality First, Service Always.”  McCorkle Nurseries is committed to continual growth in producing and marketing quality plants while protecting and improving the environment.
